Intro

Cambodia, or officially the Kingdom of Cambodia, is a country in Southeast Asia, bordering Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. The country’s name is derived from the word Khmer, which is also how the Cambodian population and their language is called.

Among tourists, Cambodia is mainly known for being the home of Angkor Wat, a stunning temple complex that is on many people’s bucket list and often visited for sunrise. However, the country has so much more to offer. Cambodia has a rich history and culture as well as friendly and hospitable locals, which makes it a delight to explore this country more in-depth!

We spent 2 weeks travelling Cambodia, visiting, of course, the stunning Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, but also a bat cave in Battambang, the salt and pepper fields in Kampot and Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia!

Cambodia FAQ’s

The best time to visit Cambodia is during dry season between November and April. During this time you can expect a lot less rain with mostly blue skies.

Yes, it is possible to visit Cambodia during rainy season. The latter starts in May and ends in October. We visited Cambodia during September, which is still very much rainy season and it ended up being fine.

However, you need to be prepared for the eventuality that there might be rainy days in-between and from our experience there will be at least on big rain shower per day, usually in the afternoon. So if you plan on visiting during rainy season, it is best to have a bit more of a flexible schedule😉.

Note: If you plan on visiting Sihanoukville and the Cambodian island of Koh Rong, we would recommend sticking to dry season as there might be more closed shops, hotels and restaurants during low season.

Officially, the currency used in Cambodia is the Cambodian Riel. However, in practice the Cambodian Riel is often only used when paying smaller fees. For bigger expenses it is common practice to pay in US Dollar.

There is a variety of power sockets used in Cambodia. As such, you will find Type A, C and/or G. To be on the safe side, bring an adapter. Typically the voltage is 230 V.

The answer to that question is definitely yes. We never had any problems getting by with English. Especially in areas regularly frequented by tourists, most hotel staff, waiters, tuk-tuk drivers, etc. will know basic English. And even if they didn’t, we were always able to communicate somehow. So, in Cambodia, I wouldn’t worry about the language barrier too much.
